Introducing Surfer Girl Lee

This weekend as I created space to be, I had a very clear awareness. I need to bring more of my inner Surfer Girl to my everyday life.

Why? Well I realized that I had returned to some of my bad habits - barking orders at my kids, getting overwhelmed by to do lists and trying to control things around me.

By taking the time to reflect about what I was feeling and experiencing in the moment, this bubbled up with such clarity. I want to lead from the heart, connect meaningfully with those around me and break free from the "have tos" and "shoulds".

While I may have known subconsciously that this was going on, and my tension filled body certainly knew, I hadn't given myself enough space to process the feelings and shift my actions.

So, here she is, my inner Surfer Girl, Lee. She's carefree, she loves the freedom of the open waters and she lives her life fully connected to her heart.

She won't always be leading my life, but I'll certainly call on her when I need to "chill out", lay back and enjoy the little things.

How can you step out of auto-pilot? Here are a few ways to bring more consciousness into your life.

  1. Get involved in something that takes you away from the day-to-day. This can be something as simple as going for a walk, putting on music and dancing or reading. All these allow for more expansive thoughts and open space for experiencing something new. This will open your mind, trigger your imagination and awaken your inner dreamer.
  2. Create space for self-care. Take a bath, get a massage or exercise. Slow things down and focus inwards. Make sure you schedule these activities into your calendar on a frequent basis so that you're investing in them proactively. Better yet, get up early enough to take 10 minutes to focus on you - breath, read, exercise, journal - whatever works to feed your soul.
  3. Take time periodically to write down how you want to construct your life. Close your eyes, take 5 deep breaths and write down what you've been doing that serves you well and what you want to let go of. This can involve actions, thoughts and people. Get them all down on paper and read it often.
